Ann Arbor SPARK is helping entrepreneurs succeed in all areas of business development planning with the Starting Your Own Business workshop. This program is designed to give talented entrepreneurs the tools and information necessary to thrive.
When Zachary and Sherri Schultz were preparing to open Brick and Mortar Modern General Store in downtown Ypsilanti, they realized they needed some business guidance. “We found a physical location and then found ourselves stuck figuring out the next steps for opening a business. We were feeling a little overwhelmed.”
The couple connected with SPARK East and then signed up for the Starting Your Own Business workshop.
During the workshop, experts and community partners present various business-related topics including product development, marketing and business plans, and getting connected to local resources.
“That workshop was not only beneficial in the lessons, it was also inspiring to be around other entrepreneurs in various stages of their planning,” said Sherri. “Without participating in that event, we wouldn’t have the contacts and resources we have today.”
Starting Your Own Business helps entrepreneurs grow a network within the Ann Arbor region. In fact, Brick and Mortar Modern General Store was the first retail store to carry a product from one of the other workshop attendees!

Starting Your Own Business runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. the third Friday of every month.
