UMCU, U-M partner to provide financial education for Wolverine Pathways
ANN ARBOR (February 27, 2017)– More than 100 middle-school and high-school students across southeast Michigan can learn more about setting financial goals and effective budgeting thanks to a new partnership between the University of Michigan Credit Union (UMCU) and the University of Michigan.
UMCU will help implement a new financial education curriculum for U-M Wolverine Pathways, a free, year-round program that partners with the families, schools and communities of Detroit, Southfield and Ypsilanti. Wolverine Pathways provides learning experiences that can help students succeed in school, college and future careers.
“Financial literacy represents a key set of understandings and skills that young people need to succeed now and in their future adult roles,” said Robert Jagers, director of Wolverine Pathways. “We are pleased that UMCU is working with us to share their expertise on these issues with both our instructors and our scholars. The donation of their knowledge and resources make them an important asset to the young people of Wolverine Pathways and excellent example of authentic partnering to support the young people in our program.”
As part of the recent partnership, UMCU will facilitate an eight-week training program this spring for instructors within Wolverine Pathways. For six weeks, students will learn about financial goal setting, effective budgeting, the basics of credit and how to be smart saving money. During the first and last week, students will take a pretest and post-class assessment to measure the success of the curriculum.
“We are grateful for this partnership with the University of Michigan because it gives us the opportunity to help prepare youth in our surrounding communities for a successful financial future,” said Tiffany Ford, UMCU President and CEO. “Wolverine Pathways is a remarkable program building bright young leaders, and UMCU is honored to provide its financial education component.”
