Our football blog series is back for the fourth straight year! We use the football season as an incentive to compare Ann Arbor to cities around the country represented by our U-M football competition. The question is always – how does Ann Arbor compare to other college towns in the U.S.?

This week, the Wolverines will host the Army Black Knights, hailing from West Point, NY. Army holds the series lead at 5-4 but Michigan has won the last four matches.

West Point and Ann Arbor are pretty different. There are likely bordering towns that fall more within the type of city that we are used to, but West Point is clearly focused only on the Army Academy — and is the oldest continuously occupied military post in the United States. Our comparison this week focuses more on this history than the rankings of typical universities for this reason.

Enjoy the game!

do we get our numbers? And what do they mean?

  • Population comes from the U.S. Census, 2017 Population Estimates. Check out Ann Arbor’s data here.
  • Enrollment comes from each university’s website (what they report on enrollment).
  • Presidential Alumni come from Wikipedia. (link)
